In light of the accelerating challenges facing contemporary societies, there is an urgent need for applied scientific research that contributes practical solutions to real-life issues impacting people’s daily lives. While theoretical research is vital for developing concepts and expanding the horizons of knowledge, the excessive focus on this type of research—as is often the case in many Jordanian and Arab universities—has led to an overwhelming accumulation of scholarly papers that lack real societal impact and rarely go beyond academic publication.
The prevailing view of academic promotion as a process tied primarily to the number of published papers in indexed journals, without consideration for the quality of those papers or their relevance to national issues, has created a gap between the university and its social and economic realities. What is the value of research that never leaves the office walls, nor influences public policy, institutional development, or quality of life? What is the worth of knowledge if it cannot drive change, build, and make an impact?
Therefore, a call is now directed at Jordanian universities to reconsider the philosophy of scientific research within their institutions by adopting policies that encourage applied research and reward efforts that are socially engaged and responsive to public needs. Strengthening the role of applied research in promotion criteria does not mean abandoning scientific and academic values; rather, it is a call to activate these values within a framework that serves the public good and positions the university as a real player in the national development landscape.
Investing in applied research is investing in the future. It is the most worthy path to reaffirm the pioneering role of universities in building a knowledge society, linking science to life, and transforming knowledge into a tool for advancement rather than a goal isolated from reality.
